On my trip to Salzburg in Summer 2020 I had the chance to play on the pianos of #openpianoforrefugees. Here it’s me and Katharina-Lia Strobl playing a nice piano improvisation together at Mozart Square.

Open Piano for Refugees places freely accessible pianos in public places. They connect people of all backgrounds through music and collect donations for their social music institute DoReMi. The institute offers affordable music lessons to people on a „pay what you want“ basis. At DoReMi EVERYONE is welcome!

I allowed myself a little joke at Dortmund Airport and wanted to play a patriotic GDR medley dressed as a police man. The songs are all from GDR times or Bands and it is important that we always remember back, because our freedom today is not self-evident.

In Germany there were two states between 1949 and 1990: The Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR. The GDR was a socialist state in which people could not live freely. There were no elections, power was held by one party alone. In 1989 there was a peaceful revolution in the GDR, the GDR collapsed. In 1990, the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany united.
