On my trip to Salzburg in Summer 2020 I had the chance to play on the pianos of #openpianoforrefugees. Here it’s me and Katharina-Lia Strobl playing a nice piano improvisation together at Mozart Square.

Open Piano for Refugees places freely accessible pianos in public places. They connect people of all backgrounds through music and collect donations for their social music institute DoReMi. The institute offers affordable music lessons to people on a „pay what you want“ basis. At DoReMi EVERYONE is welcome!

I’m playing the smash hit „Wellermann“ at Arminius Market Hall in Berlin. The song is a traditional 19th century sea shanty from New Zealand. The song reflects the hope that the time of confinement will soon be over – whether you’re cooped up on a whaler during „Tonguin“ or not supposed to leave your own four walls in a pandemic. Anyway, think positive and never lose hope.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to play my new composition „Dance Eruption“ at the Stölln airfield. Stölln is home to the oldest airfield in the world. The small town in Havelland close to Berlin is closely connected with the history of aviation. Here Otto Lilienthal carried out his pioneering flight experiments between 1893 and 1896. The German engineer studied the flight of storks and then built his first flying models.

I allowed myself a little joke at Dortmund Airport and wanted to play a patriotic GDR medley dressed as a police man. The songs are all from GDR times or Bands and it is important that we always remember back, because our freedom today is not self-evident.

In Germany there were two states between 1949 and 1990: The Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR. The GDR was a socialist state in which people could not live freely. There were no elections, power was held by one party alone. In 1989 there was a peaceful revolution in the GDR, the GDR collapsed. In 1990, the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany united.
